Four Things To Consider When Choosing A Driving Instructor

Although anyone with a driving licence can legally supervise you as a learner, you will want professional instruction as well in order to be a safe and confident driver. Choosing an instructor is one of the most important decisions you will make, so here are some things to think about.

Get recommendations

You will have many friends and family members who will already have passed their test, so it makes sense to find out about their experiences and see what they thought of their instructor. If they were satisfied with the lessons that they received, you would do well to consider this instructor for your own training.

Talk to the instructor

A good driving instructor will do more than simply tell you how to drive. They will need to be a good communicator, and they will need to provide support during your learning period. You are likely to make several mistakes as you learn, and a good instructor will be able to put you right without making you feel stupid or unfairly put upon. They should also be able to make you feel at ease, and confident and relaxed at a time when you might otherwise find yourself feeling stressed or uncertain.

Check the vehicles

Find out what different types of vehicle are available for you to learn in. You may want to learn in a vehicle with either a manual or automatic transmission, and there may just be different types of car that you find more comfortable than others. You also want to be sure that the car has all the up-to-date safety features. Make sure you get the opportunity to try some out before deciding.

Get good feedback

Make sure that your instructor will provide structured planned lessons and provide you with adequate feedback at the end - preferably through a progress card or some other written report that you can check when you get home. Ideally, your instructor will also communicate with any supervising drivers you have, such as a family member or friend with a licence who will accompany you in practice drives, so that they know how well you are doing and what aspects of your driving could do with extra work.

With a good driving instructor, you will not only pass your test, but you can look forward to a lifetime of safe and enjoyable driving. It is worth spending some time in choosing the right one.
